TIME AND DURATION
May 2019 - August 2019
BACKGROUND
In my freshman year, I suffered from some mental issues of culture shock and homesickness. I reached various institutions at school, and found that the flow in the whole process could be improved. The main problem is that there are many freshmen who suffer, so the wait time becomes long. During the wait, I could only try to think of ways by myself.
Research
Fly-on-the-wall research
I personally had more than 10 sessions at CAPS, and attend a meditation class at MARS. I recorded my experience in detail and took some picture of the waiting procedure at CAPS.
Current flow
Based on my fly-on-the-wall research and the online search of all the institutions associated with mental health at our school, I found out that there are way more institutions existing than I thought, but most of them are not explicitly addressed by the university, or only show up on the brochure in CAPS.
Interview
Mental health issue is a private and sensible topic which few people would like to share with others, so it is hard to find people to talk about this topic. Finally, I found 3 people who went to CAPS for help in the past to talk about their experiences with school mental health care.
I also did interviews with a working counselor at CAPS and the leader of a student mental health club which post articles and hold events to help students with mental health concerns.
Persona & User journey
Ideation
Rose-Thorns-Buds
I concluded the pros and cons of current mental health care experience at school.
Brainstorming
I did brainstorming according to possible solution categories and pain points concluded in the research.
Grouping & Narrowing down
I grouped the solutions, and compared them with one another using Importance/Difficulty matrix.
Scenario
An expected procedure of the user finding resources in the app, navigating to the destination, receiving counseling and tracking events through the app.
Design
The design is an app with information about mental health events, appointments making, calendars, smart answers and chatting functions.
Branding
The name of the design comes from the flower marigold. The flower blooms to the sun and symbols hope; the color is also chosen to show vitality and warmness. The symbol mainly follows the shape of a flower, and I got some inspirations from yoga matts and mandalas.
Information architecture
Wireframe
Participatory design
I asked two people who participated in the interviews to rate the effectiveness and feasibility of the functions I planned.
Mock up

All the resources of events, continuous groups and articles are listed under this function. Whether it is a single event or not and whether it needs multiple times of participation are shown by the icon at the top-right corner of each card.
Profile and appointments
Check your coming and past events in the calendar. The alarm will be automatically set. You can click the card to see the detail of the event.
Smart answering robot
Click the center button at the bottom bar to start a smart chat. The ai will offer suggestions to events, articles and peer helps from your keywords.
Peer & professional help
Get to know someone who can help you from events, groups and smart robot. Previous users of the app who had passed through difficult days similar to you can volunteer to give help to others.
Map and navigation
