BACKGROUND

When I took linguistics classes at school, I was fascinated by the variety of languages, their different pronunciations, words and syntax, and more importantly, the culture associated with them. Luckily, I have a friend who is doing field research on languages in Southwest China. He told me a personal story of researching a language called Horpa. He visited an elder man in Sichuan Province to record his speeches in this language, and the man gave him a book with local poems as a present. Horpa has 40,000 native speakers, but the data is collected 30 years ago. Nowadays, no school teaches this language any more. This story makes me conscious about the issue of endangered language. Through this project, I want to address this issue firmly and propose a possible speculative design to help raise the awareness of this issue.

Branding

The name "Panorama" comes from the aim to show a wide range of languages to the audience.
There's also a reason to choose a name that starts with the sound [p]. According to some research, bilabial sounds such as [p], [b] and [m] might be the first sounds that human can produce. [p] is also the first sound to be seen in the international phonetic alphabet chart.

Omni-search

The search is easily accessible from every page through the top bar. Unique UI elements help classify between different types of results.

Sort according to language status

Different language status are presented with an accordion. The user can also access a more specified page of each status level.

Sort according to language family

Eachtoken has a background of pattern associated with its culture. Flexible tokens encourage users to drill down the chosen language family. Subgroups of the family are shown in simplified treemaps.

Sort according to region

This set of pages offer a map visualization of languages in a chosen region. The users can click and zoom the map, and use the filter to narrow down the search or change the appearance of visualization.

Top bar navigation

The top bar includes a back and home botton, a search bar and a drop-down menu to navigate to all major pages.
